GUIDELINES FOR ULTRASOUNDS

Most patients will receive at least two ultrasounds in pregnancy – one in the first trimester to ensure proper dating and one in the second trimester for anatomy evaluation and if desired, gender.

Patients should not expect an ultrasound on the first visit, however, as the timing of the first ultrasound is at the discretion of the provider.

When an ultrasound is performed or scheduled, patients should drink the following amount of water one hour before the ultrasound. The bladder must be full for the ultrasound. DO NOT empty your bladder unless instructed by the physician.

IF YOU ARE 12-WEEKS: No prep (Transvaginal Probe)

IF YOU ARE 12-40 WEEKS: Drink 500ml of fluid (Abdominal Probe)

ALL CERVICAL ASSESSMENTS REQUIRE THE USE OF THE TRANSVAGINAL PROBE
